Killarney in County Kerry is a top tourist attraction in Ireland. Known for the famed Ring of Kerry drive and the stunning Killarney National park, it’s a favourite place for both Irish locals and international travellers. There are plenty of things to do in Killarney but no visit to this Irish town is complete without a night at a pub. Killarney has no shortage of pubs but, as with every Irish city, I definitely have my favourites. From themed pubs to craft breweries and more, here are my picks for the best pubs in Killarney for a pint.
Calling all Lord of the Rings fans! If you’ve ever dreamed of having a pint with Gandalf or protecting your burger from a hungry Gollum then this is the pub for you. Named after the Hobbit’s homeland of middle earth, the Shire offers an array of beers, cocktails, shots and gourmet burgers with names from the famous LOTR series. If you are lucky, Gandalf or Gollum will be around to take photos with or you can enjoy the free traditional music on Wednesdays and live band on Sundays. The Shire is an absolute must visit and one of the best pubs in Killarney.
If you are looking to party in Killarney, then look no further than The Grand. It’s a popular spot for stag and hen parties (bachelor and bachelorette parties for North Americas) and for travellers looking for a fun night out. The Grand is a mix of an Irish pub and a nightclub and offers a variety of music 7 nights a week. If you are in the mood for Irish music, then stay in the front of The Grand at the Front Pub which is open until 1 am. Looking to dance? Head to the back where a DJ will spin the latest songs until 3 am. If you are looking to party, then The Grand is a great pick for the best pubs in Killarney.
Is there anything better than pizza and beer? I don’t think so, and if you agree then you will also love the Killarney Brewing Company. This independent craft beer brewery offers not just fantastic food and drink, but also a great tour experience to visitors to Killarney. The tour will run about an hour and includes a hilarious video. To add to the charm, all of the Killarney Brewery beers are names after Irish legends and myths. Killarney Brewery is one of the best Killarney pubs, especially if you are interested in craft beer. Visitors should know that the Killarney Brewery is closed Sunday and Monday.
Operating since the 1800s, Courtney’s bar is one of Killarney’s historic pubs. It’s another pub with a cozy feel thanks to the warm, wooden interior, big open fireplace, and the fact that it is a family run business. Great music sessions and a vast selection of whiskies, beers, and craft beers make it the perfect place to come for a pint. Or, if you are a whisky enthusiast, joining bar owner Brian Murphy for a special whisky tasting (groups of 6 or more, need to be organized ahead of time). Without a doubt, this friendly pub is a classic and one of the best pubs in Killarney.
JM Reidys was another one of my favourite Killarney pubs. It was once a sweet shop but has been transformed into a large Irish pub with several rooms, bars, and an outdoor patio section with a seating area. It’s a popular place for locals and visitors alike and often offers live music. They serve breakfast and lunch during the day but turn into a popular nightlife spot that offers drinks only in the evening. It’s one of the most popular pubs in Killarney for a pint or a cocktail.
Murphy’s of Killarney
There’s something about Murphy’s that just makes it feel like a homey, cozy pub perfect for a meal or a drink. The food here from the soup to the fish and chips to the lasagna is filling and delicious and there are plenty of local and international beers to choose from. Murphy’s of Killarney is a classic establishment not just in town, but within County Kerry. It’s definitely one best pubs in Killarney and, if you are looking for accommodation, the rooms above are a great place to stay.
Killarney has plenty more pubs but these are my top picks. Just rememeber your Irish pub etiquette and you will be good to go!
